Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo mothership WhiteKnightTwo made its historic 59 minute maiden flight at about 08:16 local time on December 21, 2008 from Mojave airport, reaching an altitude of 16,000 feet (4,880 meters).
“It reached an altitude 4,000 feet above the original test plan’s maximum altitude. That is how confident we are about the aircraft. Now we have to download all the data. There will be another flight early in the new year,” says Virgin Galactic president Will Whitehorn.

Northrop Grumman debuted one of the most advanced robot aircraft in the world, the X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS). The X-47B is intended to operate from the flight deck of US Navy aircraft carriers, carrying out entire missions including air-to-air refuelling without pilot input.

Boeing 747 Airborne Laser Team Fires High-Energy Laser

The Boeing Company, industry teammates and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency last week fired a high-energy laser through the Airborne Laser’s (ABL) beam control/fire control system, completing the first ground test of the entire weapon system integrated aboard the aircraft.
During the test at Edwards Air Force Base, the laser beam traveled through the beam control/fire control system before exiting the aircraft through the nose-mounted turret. The beam control/fire control system steered and focused the beam onto a simulated ballistic-missile target.

MIT and NASA Designing Silent Aircraft

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics recently won a contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to design quieter, more energy efficient, and more environmentally friendly commercial airplanes. The two million dollar contract from NASA is just an initial step in bringing green technologies to the sky, but it is an important step toward bringing current trends in engineering and product design to the airline industry.
