Boeing Successfully Flies Fuel Cell-Powered Airplane

Boeing announced that it has, for the first time in aviation history, flown a manned airplane powered by hydrogen fuel cells. During the flights, the pilot of the experimental airplane climbed to an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level using a combination of battery power and power generated by hydrogen fuel cells. Then, after reaching the cruise altitude and disconnecting the batteries, the pilot flew straight and level at a cruising speed of 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) for approximately 20 minutes on power solely generated by the fuel cells. R/C B-29 with X-1 Rocket Airplane

The first supersonic flight re-lived with radio controlled planes. This B-29 may be the coolest R/C plane ever made. Powered by four 80cc engines, it has a wingspan of 21 feet and weighs only 98 lbs. It does loops, rolls, spins and flies inverted over the runway. and oh yes drops an X-1 rocket plane from its wing.

DARPA Falcon hypersonic X-plane

The Falcon program objectives are to develop and demonstrate hypersonic technologies that will enable prompt global reach missions. This capability is envisioned to entail a reusable Hypersonic Cruise Vehicle (HCV) capable of delivering 12,000 pounds of payload at a distance of 9,000 nautical miles from CONUS in less than two hours. The technologies required by a HCV include high lift-to-drag technologies, high temperature materials, thermal protection systems, and guidance, navigation, and control.

Cessna SkyCatcher Prototype Completes First Flight

New Aeronautics Competitions for High School & College Students

The Fundamental Aeronautics Program of the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters announces a new aeronautics competition for high school and college students for the 2007-2008 academic year. Students are asked to think about a next generation, all new DC-3 type of aircraft. High school students are invited to write an essay describing how the transportation of goods and passengers might be revolutionized with the 21st century equivalent to the DC-3. College level students are invited to design the aircraft, using guidelines provided by NASA, and suggest a minimum of three valid operational scenarios for their proposed vehicle.Visit the NASA web site for more information.

F-35 Lightning II STOVL completes successful “power on”

Electrical power was applied to the Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] F-35B Lightning II for the first time Thursday night, initiating a series of ground tests that will lead to the inaugural flight of the short-takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) stealth fighter next spring.

“The successful ‘power-on’ demonstrates that the integration of this unique aircraft is progressing to plan. It signals that production of our first F-35B Lightning II is on track for first flight next year, a key step toward realizing the aviation future of the U.S. Marines, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy,” said Dan Crowley, Lockheed Martin executive vice president and F-35 program general manager. The aircraft is scheduled to roll out of the factory in December.
